Mangroves are forest ecosystems that grow in tropical and subtropical coastal regions, particularly in Indonesia, which has the longest coastline in the world. Mangroves are crucial in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems, protecting shorelines from erosion, and serving as habitats for various marine species. Additionally, mangroves act as natural filters that can reduce water and air pollution.
Mangroves are also highly effective carbon sinks, absorbing five times more carbon than tropical rainforests. Therefore, their presence is vital in combating global climate change.
Despite their remarkable benefits, mangrove ecosystems face numerous challenges. Land exploitation, unsustainable coastal development, and marine pollution have led to large-scale mangrove degradation. In many areas, including Banda Aceh, mangroves have been damaged due to land clearing for shrimp farming or tourism development that disregards environmental impacts.
To address these challenges, effective and sustainable solutions are needed to preserve mangrove ecosystems. One such solution involves using IoT (Internet of Things) technology through a digital water quality monitoring system.

Indosat Ooredoo and PT Nocola IoT Solutions, in support of CSR activities, are committed to making a tangible contribution to environmental preservation. This collaboration not only demonstrates care for the environment but also reflects the practical application of modern technology to achieve sustainability goals.
The main objective of this project is to create a solution that can assist in monitoring and preserving the mangrove ecosystem in Banda Aceh. Through the digitalization of the Water Quality Monitoring System (WQMS), this project is expected to provide real-time data on water conditions around the mangroves and support sustainable mangrove rehabilitation efforts.
This project not only has a positive impact on ecosystems but also provides direct benefits to the surrounding community. With an advanced monitoring system, local communities and government authorities can take appropriate measures to maintain the health of the mangrove ecosystem, prevent pollution, and optimize mangrove rehabilitation programs. On the other hand, this collaboration also creates opportunities for local communities to engage in more sustainable natural resource management.

The Water Quality Monitoring System (WQMS) is a technology designed to automatically and in real-time measure water quality. This technology utilizes various sensors that can detect important water parameters such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen levels, turbidity, and the presence of harmful chemicals. The data collected by these sensors are then transmitted to a cloud-based platform, where the information can be accessed by users anytime and anywhere.
In the mangrove conservation project in Banda Aceh, WQMS plays a crucial role in monitoring the water conditions around the mangrove forests. With continuous monitoring, scientists and project managers can quickly identify problems affecting the mangrove ecosystem, such as pollution spikes or changes in water quality that could endanger mangrove growth and other organisms living within the ecosystem.
Nocola IoT Solutions’ WQMS is equipped with a variety of advanced features designed to support effective environmental monitoring:

Banda Aceh is one of the regions in Indonesia with a rich and important mangrove ecosystem. However, in recent years, the mangrove forests in this region have suffered degradation due to pollution and human activities. To restore the mangrove ecosystem and ensure its sustainability for the future, local authorities have collaborated with the private sector on various conservation projects, one of which is supported by Indosat Ooredoo and Nocola IoT Solutions.
This project utilizes WQMS technology to monitor water quality in rehabilitated mangrove areas. By installing sensors at various strategic points, the project team can monitor key parameters that affect the health of the mangrove ecosystem. The data collected helps scientists understand how water conditions impact the growth of mangroves and other organisms.
Additionally, the early warning system provided by WQMS enables the conservation team to quickly detect any increase in pollution or changes in water quality that require immediate action. This allows for a more responsive and effective approach to maintaining ecosystem health.
An essential aspect of this project is the collaboration with local communities. The local population is involved in the monitoring and rehabilitation of mangroves, which not only raises awareness of the importance of environmental conservation but also equips them with new skills in using modern technology. With the support of Indosat Ooredoo and Nocola IoT Solutions, local communities can actively participate in safeguarding the ecosystem in which they live.

The primary benefit of this project is the preservation of the mangrove ecosystem, which is vital to the environment. Through real-time water quality monitoring, this project ensures that the environmental conditions around the mangroves remain conducive to their growth and the organisms living within the ecosystem.
This project also provides significant social benefits to the surrounding communities. With the conservation of mangroves, coastal populations can enjoy various ecological benefits provided by the mangroves, such as protection against coastal erosion, improved fisheries yield, and enhanced carbon absorption.
The collaboration between Indosat Ooredoo and Nocola IoT Solutions serves as an example of how technology can be applied in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities to generate positive, sustainable impacts. The use of modern technology like WQMS not only increases the efficiency of environmental conservation but also demonstrates how companies can contribute to global efforts to address climate change and preserve nature.
